Tocando Silencios / Touching Silences
2026
Tocando Silencios / Touching Silences (2026) is an artist’s book that examines the visual language of Mexican nota roja newspapers through 90 photographic fragments drawn from their front pages. Focusing on gestures of the hands, the book reflects on what Rita Segato describes as the “pedagogical logic of cruelty” and on how repeated exposure to images of violence shapes the ways we relate to one another and affects our capacity for empathy.
The selected gestures move between fear and desire, while also revealing pain, loneliness, grief, care, submission, and resistance. Removed from their original context and brought into a new sequence, these fragments shift attention away from the spectacularization of violence toward gestures that speak of vulnerability, affect, and human relations, without rendering the cruelty, violence, and extractivism embedded in the images.
Accompanied by a personal text, the images open up an emotional and ethical reflection on photographic representation. The book considers the sovereignty of the body with a history and relationships, and with a right to mourning and farewell.
The book’s artisanal format create a slower encounter with the images. In contrast to the rapid circulation and consumption of violent imagery in the mass media.Tocando Silencios proposes a space in which looking becomes an act of attention and reflection.
The photographs date from the mid-1990s to 2025 and come from the collection of the Hemeroteca Nacional de México, including material published in El Gráfico, La Prensa, Metro, Pásala! and Alarma.
* The nota roja is a form of sensationalist journalism that frequently features images of corpses, often alongside sexualized depictions of bodies perceived as female, on its front pages. The origins and history of the nota roja can be traced from the colonial era through the introduction of photography and print media to the present day in Mexico.
