I am here, Estoy aquí is a journey into the unconscious in which Brenda Alamilla blends past and present, following images from her motherhood to her childhood experiences of violence and abuse.
By combining fragments of memories and dreams and referencing the nagual, a personal and protective spirit from Mesoamerican mythology. The Aztecs and Mayans believed that the nahuals manifested themselves in animal or plant forms and gave advice through dreams to the person with whom they had a connection.
The series, composed of biographical material, photographs, collages and poems, is the prelude to a long-term, family-centered project that addresses the pervasive violence experienced by many women in Mexico, both in their private lives and in a broader social context.
